Whilst glass has been the predominant type of mirror until recent years, acrylic mirrors are an increasingly appealing option, especially where safety and weight are a factor.
Horror Stories of Glass Mirrors
There are innumerable incidents where people have been injured or even killed by glass mirrors breaking, including:
- a Scottish child who suffered serious eye injuries after his father smashed mirrors during an angry outburst at their home
- an Oregon woman who suffered serious eye injuries during a yoga class after a glass mirror fell on her.
- A four-year-old boy who was killed at a Hugo Boss store when a mirror fell on him, leading to the company being fined £1.2 million
Glass mirrors in commercial buildings may render business owners at risk of costly legal action should a worker or visitor be injured. Acrylic mirrors are an excellent choice for those who wish to enhance the security of their residence or business. Plastic Warehouse is a good place to go if you need an acrylic mirror in Australia.
An acrylic mirror is made by coating a clear sheet of acrylic with a mirror substance, which produces a beautiful mirrored surface that looks like glass.
Lighter weight: Acrylic mirror is much lighter than glass. This makes it both less costly to transport and also easier to handle and install.
More impact resistant: The expression ‘fragile as glass’ is well known, for good reason – it takes very little pressure to break a glass mirror. In contrast, acrylic mirrors are much tougher. On the rare occasion that it does break, it breaks into larger and less sharp pieces, quite different to the fine and skin-and-eye piercing shards of glass that can cause catastrophic injuries.
Bends before breaking: Acrylic mirror has some flexibility. When put under strain, it flexes before it breaks and can even be manufactured into curved surfaces
Mouldability: Acrylic mirrors are more easily moulded into different shapes than glass mirrors are. They are also easier to cut and drill, without requiring special equipment like glass cutters.
More Than a Clear Finish
Acrylic mirrors come in the traditional clear finish, and are also available in gold, silver and rose gold finishes, offering a deluxe appearance for higher-end uses, or to match existing furnishings in the building. For more information about acrylic mirrors, you can Contact Plastic Warehouse.
