5 Common Mistakes With Blog Writing to Avoid for Small Businesses

Creating a company blog is one of the best ways to promote your brand and engage with consumers. With individuals spending more time than ever on the internet, having a clear channel to communicate with them can make all the difference. 

According to recent insights, companies that make blogging a priority are about 13 times more likely to receive a positive return on their investment. The problem companies have is that their blog doesn’t generate enough views, leading them to believe it isn’t worth their time.

1. Not Posting Frequently Enough

Consumers nowadays demand a constant flow of information to satisfy their craving. This craving comes from years of scrolling through endless social media feeds. 

According to a study from Microsoft, the average consumer has an attention span of around eight seconds. Eight seconds might be a bit of a stretch, but it doesn’t change the fact that consumers are being fed a constant flow of information and can only retain a certain amount. 

Generating frequent posts will keep users engaged with the brand, as well as attract new consumers. 

2. Ignoring the Data

When developing blog posts, most of the information should be tied to hard data — facts and statistics that can’t be disputed. The absolute last thing you need is to have a controversial blog post. 

Sticking to the facts will ensure you are catching the reader’s attention in a compelling way, not deceptively. Showing the proof will also help readers distinguish the main points of the blog post. 

3. Forgetting to Target an Audience 

It would be great if you could write a blog post that speaks to every consumer, but that is nearly impossible because, as humans, we all have different interests and beliefs. 

Gearing your blog posts towards your audience can help boost engagement and keep users coming back for more.

To specifically target an audience, keep track of analytics to see what users are engaging with and then focus on how you can improve. For example, take a look at this blog post on compliance gap analysis — it is specifically designed to target a distinct audience. 

4. Copying Others

Copying other company blogs is a bad tactic. You should never be putting data out there that comes from a competitor. Blog posts should be original ideas aimed at providing value to the consumers.
